Before starting the Aarti, one should take a bath and wear clean clothes and start the aarti after meditating on Ganesha. Blow the conch thrice before starting the aarti. While blowing the conch, keep your face upwards. After that start the aarti. Clap while performing the aarti. Ring the bell in a rhythm and sing the aarti keeping in mind the sura and the rhythm. Along with this, play instruments like cymbals, majhira, tabla, harmonium etc. For the aarti, there should be a light of ghee made of pure cotton i.e. cotton. Kapoor Aarti is also performed. The number of lights can be one, five, nine, eleven or twenty one. Aarti should be performed in a rhythmic manner in the clockwise direction.
