Astrology Questions, Answered Straight
Short answers to the questions people actually type, each with the tradition's answer and the practical take. Every answer links to the fuller guide. Where a tradition makes a claim, we report it as the tradition's claim, not as a promise, and we never rank one system as truer than another.
Is astrology real?
It depends what "real" means. As a predictive science, no: controlled studies have not shown birth charts to predict personality or events, and astronomy and astrology parted ways centuries ago. As a real, coherent tradition, yes: it is a symbolic language refined over thousands of years that many people use for reflection, timing, and self-description, and it rewards being understood on its own terms. This site explains what each system actually says, in systems of astrology, and leaves what to make of it to you.
What is the difference between astrology and astronomy?
Astronomy is the physical science of what is in the sky; astrology is the interpretive tradition of what the sky is held to mean. They share a history and a coordinate system and nothing else. A birth chart is astronomically accurate as a map, as covered in birth chart basics; the meaning layer is the tradition's.
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
Because the two systems measure from different starting points. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the March equinox; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars, and the two frames have drifted about 24 degrees apart through the precession of the equinoxes. Most people shift back one sign in a Vedic chart, and neither answer is a mistake. The full explanation is in sidereal vs tropical.
Does my rising sign matter?
In the tradition's reading, a great deal: the rising sign is held to describe your outward manner and first impression, and it anchors the entire house structure of the chart. Many astrologers suggest reading horoscopes for your rising sign rather than your sun sign for that reason. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an exact birth time; see birth chart basics.
What is the difference between my sun sign and my moon sign?
The sun sign is read as your core identity and direction; the moon sign is read as your emotional needs and instincts. They usually differ, because the Sun changes sign monthly and the Moon every two to two and a half days. The full comparison is in moon sign vs sun sign.
Do I really need my exact birth time?
For a full chart in any system, yes. The Western and Vedic ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, the Vedic dasha clock is set from the Moon's exact position, and the Chinese hour pillar covers two-hour windows. Date and place alone still give a partial chart; birth chart basics explains what you lose without the time.
What if I don't know my birth time?
Use the best evidence you have, in this order: birth certificate, hospital record, family memory. If nothing survives, an honest reading simply drops the time-dependent parts: no rising sign or houses in the Western and Vedic charts, three pillars instead of four in the Chinese chart. Less resolution, not nothing; see birth chart basics.
Can two zodiac signs be incompatible?
Every tradition has friction pairings: Western astrology reads hard angles between signs as tension, and the Chinese tradition names six clash pairs among the animals. But no serious practitioner in any system reads two sun signs or two animals alone as a verdict on a real relationship, which involves whole charts and, more to the point, whole people. The folk rules and their limits are laid out in Chinese zodiac compatibility.
What is my Chinese zodiac animal?
It is the animal of your birth year in the Chinese calendar, with one large catch: the Chinese year does not start on January 1. Folk usage changes the animal at Chinese New Year; the classical BaZi convention, the one we use, changes it at Li Chun (February 3 to 5). If you were born in January or early February, your animal may belong to the previous year, a detail many websites get wrong. The Chinese zodiac calculator handles the boundary correctly.
What is my Chinese element?
Each Chinese year carries one of the five elements (五行 wǔxíng: wood, fire, earth, metal, water) alongside its animal, in a sixty-year cycle of pairs; 1996 is a Fire Rat year, 1990 a Metal Horse year. The element comes from the year's heavenly stem, and the same new-year boundary caveat applies to January and February births. The Chinese zodiac calculator returns both animal and element.
What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字 bāzì, "eight characters") is the Chinese birth chart: four pillars for the year, month, day, and hour of birth, two characters each. Where sun-sign astrology reads the month and the zodiac animal reads the year, BaZi centers on the day you were born, the day master (日主 rìzhǔ), which the tradition takes as the self. The primer is what is BaZi.
What is a nakshatra?
A nakshatra (नक्षत्र nakṣatra) is one of the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, segments of 13°20' that track the Moon's daily motion. The nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth is your janma nakshatra, or birth star, and it carries at least as much weight in Vedic practice as your sign. Start with nakshatra basics.
What is a dasha?
A dasha (दशा daśā) is a planetary period in Vedic astrology's timing system. In the standard Vimshottari scheme, nine planetary periods of fixed lengths cycle through 120 years, and your birth nakshatra sets where in the cycle your life begins. The scheme is laid out in nakshatra basics.
Which astrology system is the most accurate?
None of them can claim measured predictive accuracy, and we will not pretend otherwise; within their own terms, each is rigorous and internally consistent. The honest question is not which is true but which question you want asked: the systems genuinely differ in what they examine and emphasize. That map is systems of astrology.
Did NASA change the zodiac signs?
No. NASA is an astronomy agency and does not define astrological signs; the recurring story comes from noting that the constellations have drifted relative to the calendar and that the ecliptic crosses a thirteenth constellation, Ophiuchus. Western tropical astrology was never based on the constellations' current positions, so nothing changed; the drift itself is real and is exactly what sidereal vs tropical explains.
What does Mercury retrograde actually mean?
Astronomically, it is an optical effect: a few times a year Mercury appears to move backward against the stars as Earth and Mercury pass each other. The tradition reads these weeks as prone to communication and travel snags and advises double-checking rather than dreading. What the planets are held to govern is covered in birth chart basics.
What does it mean to be born on a cusp?
It means your birthday falls within a day or two of a sign boundary, where the Sun's crossing date shifts slightly year to year. In the chart itself there is no blend: the Sun occupied exactly one sign at your birth moment, and your birth year and time settle which. Moon sign vs sun sign covers how to check.
Why does my horoscope feel so accurate?
Two honest reasons. Psychology calls one the Barnum effect: broad, flattering statements feel personally precise, which is worth knowing and takes nothing away from anyone. The tradition's own answer is that a sun-sign column is one twelfth of humanity per paragraph, and that a full chart, with its moon sign, rising sign, and the rest, is where specificity is supposed to live; see birth chart basics.
